![]() ![]() The list of adjustments includes the gearbox, turbo, suspension, differential, brakes, body, steering, electrics, exhaust, drive shaft, and axles. In set-up, players can take a quick survey of the courses, with a top-down look at the map, and they adjust all of their parts and pieces before heading to the starting line. In Championship, the game has changed very little - which is a good thing. Having said that, this six-car race is better than any other rally game on just about any system.įor me, the heart of the game is Championship, in which drivers plug through nearly 90 courses to gain trophies in each locale. The cars run at a slightly slower framerate than in any of the other gameplay modes and some of the subtleties are lost in the controls. This year Codemasters did it, without too much compromise. Challenge may not appear like a big deal for most racing games, but the subtlety of the physics engine in Colin McRae 2.0 requires so much attention that placing five other cars on the course simultaneously is almost inhumanly difficult. Rally spotlights five different gameplay modes, including Championship, Single Rally, Single Stage, Time Trial, and the new mode, Challenge, a single race against five other computer-controlled racers. Codemasters surely restructured the game to include this mode to make the game more friendly, and it certainly has done that well, and thankfully without destroying the essence of the racing. The sim-like edge has been dulled, enabling newbies and wimps to get into the game with a little more ease. The big difference between this and Rally mode is that races are packed with more opponents, and the driving is slightly more accessible. Arcade features three kinds of races, Championship, Single Race, and Time Trial. Players can jump into two major sections of the game, Arcade and Rally. Gameplay The game is constructed with many of the same functions as last year's version, but it's been redesigned for faster access. It features improvements that run through every fabric of the game, whether it's minimizing former seams, brightening up the graphics, adding simultaneous rally races, or fleshing out the car deformation system. Colin McRae 2.0 is an understudy in the art of making sequels. But what it lacks in spectator thrill, it makes up for in every other way. The racing takes place in many regions throughout the world, and it's based on time, not head to head competitions, so it lacks the thrill of NASCAR, touring car, or street racing. ![]() The basis of rally racing is to drive in the most super-charged, high-torque cars ever created, at the highest speeds ever against the brutal forces of nature, wind, rain, snow, mud, and combinations thereof. In short, Colin McRae 2.0 represents the very best in what a sequel should be, improving upon the former game in every way. And of course, the graphics, one of the weaker aspects of last year's game, have improved in several areas, including detailed textures, a brighter color palette, a few more camera perspectives, and a more focused replay mode. Load times have improved from the first game, too. Also, the menus are nearly all text, with the exception of the car set-up, but they're as organized, sleek and as elegant as any menus I have ever seen. Access points like Information, setup, repair, race, save, and quit are all on the same screen, while different sub-sections switch in and out of view without changing the screen, eliminating load times and screen-switches. The completely redesigned menus are super quick and elegantly designed for instant access to cars, stages, various modes, and everything else necessary. To start each rally off, players are shown a brand new rolling video of the course layout accompanied by a narrator's voice-over describing the terrain and pitfalls. Presentation The new improvements to the game are hefty, but they don't detract from the game's core. For anyone who loves rally racing, this game is an absolute must-have, and for those who are only slightly interested, just go get this game now. It outshines its predecessor in every respect - gameplay, graphics, sound, presentation, and well, if "kick-ass" were a category, Colin McRae Rally 2.0 would win in the that department, too. In short, Colin McRae 2.0 is the best rally game I've ever played.
